The second leg of the FedEx Cup play-offs is the Deutsche Bank Championship this week, running from Friday to Monday to take in the Labor Day holiday in the United States. The TPC course at Boston is below average in length by modern standards at 7214 yards. The course puts a premium on accuracy to the greens but players that are big hitters of the tee have an advantage. Potential contenders will have to putt well this week.
Tiger Woods has a back injury and is not a confirmed starter which means Phil Mickelson looks a decent bet. The Open champion has a decent bank of course form and his short game gives him a comparative advantage over the rest of the field. Jim Furyk is well suited to the host course and a continuation of his recent form can see him contend. Matt Kuchar deserves support based on his current and course form.
Kuchar has enough in his favour this week to outscore Webb Simpson over 72 holes, including better course form. Dustin Johnson combines length of the tee with solid approach play and those skills make him a worthy favourite to beat Keegan Bradley over four rounds. Furyk has the better profile for this challenge than Zach Johnson who has had a busier recent schedule than most.
