Dustin Johnson is the only player in a field of major championship depth in the top 40 for the three key skills for good scoring at the Blue Monster course at Doral that hosts this week’s WGC Cadillac Championship. In it’s several guises since the first renewal in 1999 only one winner, Nick Watney in 2011, was not a former or future major champion.
The tournament is a rarity in that Tiger Woods is only third in the betting, despite being a six times multiple winner. There are injury doubts about the world number one and he won’t take any chances with the US Masters imminent. He withdrew from the Honda Classic last Sunday after the 13th hole, complaining of a back problem that will be treated this week.
With doubts about Woods participation Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott would appear to have strong claims. However, ultimately McIlroy had a disappointing week at the Honda Classic. This was the tournament in which he walked off the course during his second round last year. Despite taking a two shot lead into a final round a two over par 74 only qualified him for a four man play-off, won by Russell Henley at the first extra hole.
Henley is a player that came onto the radar when he won the Sony Open at the start of last season. He holed everything on the back nine and seemed to have a game well suited to Augusta and the US Masters. It was too soon in his career to figure in a major last April but there will be worse 200/1 shots for the first major of the season next month.
Scott does not appear suited to this week’s host course so others are preferred. Johnson has yet to win a major so in theory the trends and stats are against him this week. However, he looks to be a major champion in waiting and that type of pedigree can see him beat a field that includes the top 30 players in the current world rankings.
