The Wells Fargo Championship had a reputation in its early days from being founded in 2003 for seeing major champions contend and win the tournament.
That reputation has been lost somewhat since the tournament moved to the week before the Players Championship but several major champions are prominent in the betting.
Rory McIlroy is the favourite and he has won two majors. Ultimately the US Masters was disappointing and he had the ignominy of playing with a marker in his third round. McIlroy has decided to play in the week before majors this season and as the Players is known as the fifth major he competes this week.
Justin Rose won the US Open last year so is proven at the highest level when accuracy is more important than distance. He should be well suited to this week’s host course at Quail Hollow which demands accuracy more than distance. His lack of significant course experience is a handicap he may not be able to overcome especially as he is in opposition to several course specialists.
Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk and Zach Johnson are prominent US players that have won majors. Mickelson’s tally is five now and he just needs the US Open to complete the career Grand Slam. He has finished second in his national Open five times and this is now the title he craves most. Furyk and Johnson are also well suited to the course so the event could well be won by a major champion again.
