The second tournament of the new season is the Shriners for Hospitals Open. The host course is TPC at Summerlin in Las Vegas. At 7223 yards the course is short by modern standards. The wide fairways means the big but inaccurate hitters will not be at a disadvantage. The greens are large and easy to hit which means the tournament is often a birdie fest so birdie conversion and putting are key areas.
Brooks Koepka is a young player with some high finishes on the European Tour. The field on the PGA Tour this week is relatively weak as the better places are now finished for the year. Koepka scores highly for putting and driving distance and is good enough to make the payout places at this level. Robert Garrigus has built up a solid bank of course form and also scores highly for the key skills this week. The same could be said of Kevin Na whose excellent putting can offset any inaccuracy off the tee.
Garrigus has enough in his profile to outscore Jimmy Walker over 72 holes. Nick Watney will be more suited to playing conditions than Webb Simpson. Graham DeLaet has the form and experience to beat Hideki Matsuyama in their matchup over four rounds.
