The Barclays

The Barclays

  • The Barclays is the first tournament in the FedEx Cup, the winner of which will earn a 10 million dollar bonus. That prize has attracted a strong field this week, including the top 20 players in the world rankings. This week’s host course is Liberty National in New Jersey, staging the event for the first time since 2009. The course is about average in length by modern standards but is somewhat unique in that it rewards long driving and consistent approach play.

Dustin Johnson is above average in length off the tee so should have more eagle and birdie opportunities than most. Henrik Stenson looks like a “winner about to happen” while Adam Scott has a skill’s profile well suited to this week’s challenge.

Our three outright selections are suited to playing conditions this week so are fancied to beat their opponents in the pick of the 72 hole matchbets. Scott, Stenson and Johnson have the attributes to beat Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day respectively over 72 holes. There are solid reasons to oppose each of those players who will all have better opportunities in the next three play-off events.

I know from personal experience that we don’t want to hear tipsters being too self-congratulatory, especially with golf which should be judged over a full season. Having that said it was almost the perfect week and we were so close to the Holy Grail of golf betting, the Transatlantic double, Stephen Gallacher/Bernd Wiesberger and Adam Scott. I had mixed feeling after the play-off for the Johnnie Walker Championship. I backed Gallacher at 25/1 but Tommy Fleetwood comes from Southport, where I was born.

Well done Ian, just heard Adam Scott won, nice 16/1 winner for you.
