The Wyndham Championship is this week’s tournament on the US PGA Tour but there is nothing in Europe until next week. We had a good run for our money in the PGA Championship last week with Henrik Stenson who finished third. I really thought we were on to a decent priced winner but landing in a divot on the 14th hole was costly as a potential birdie became a bogey. However, I think Jason Dufner played the best golf overall and was a worthy winner. His wedge play was wonderful and set up three tap in birdies.
The one good thing about golf betting is that we can also put a near miss behind us and there are more decent opportunities immediately. For a tournament following a major there is a decent field at the Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship. The course puts a premium on accuracy over distance so for the purpose of this week’s outright bets we focus on players that score well in the accuracy disciplines. Please note Stan James and BetVictor are going six places while other bookmakers are just offering the first five in place betting.
Boo Weekley is in the top 30 for both driving accuracy and greens in regulation. He had a decent week in the PGA Championship without feeling the heat of contending in a major and also has a decent bank of course form despite missing the cut last year. David Toms made the top 10 last week which showed he can still compete on courses that do not favour the big hitters and is worthy of consideration. Zach Johnson has had a busy recent schedule and could convert several good efforts by being placed if his stamina allows to play at his best on a course suited to his game.
In 72 hole match bets I like Weekley, one of our outright picks, to beat Brendon De Jonge, who has a decent record at this level without looking like winning. Carl Pettersson has the skill’s to beat Nick Watney who is struggling after a change of equipment. Toms should have enough to outscore Roberto Castro whose long game is inferior to his opponent especially when approach play is more important than length off the tee.
Wyndham Championship selections:
Outright:
1 point each way Zach Johnson at 14/1 with Stan James (top 6).
1 point each way Boo Weekley at 55/1 with BetVictor (top 6).
1 point each way David Toms at 45/1 with Stan James (top 6).
72 Hole Matchbets:
3 points Boo Weekley to beat Brendon De Jonge at 5/6 with Bet365.
3 points Carl Pettersson to beat Nick Watney at 9/10.
3 points David Toms to beat Roberto Castro at 9/10 with Bet365.
